25 Days of Christmas Ornaments - DAY 11

Here's yet another one that requires drying time, but let me share the process...

My daughters talked about doing this at camp this past summer and I thought it sounded like fun.  I did look it up online as well, and I tried a couple of different methods - but I'm not too sure if I'm happy with the outcome yet.

It's a yarn ornament using a balloon as a base.  Eventually I will pop the balloon and (theoretically) a lovely ornament will be left in its place.

I had an instant problem - the balloon was not perfectly round when blown up - oops!  It was pretty round at full size, but that ornament would look ridiculous on my tree.  It ended up looking something like a Whoopie Cushion.

I started out with the balloon, some plain white yarn and a jar of Mod Podge

I tied the string around the tied-off end of the balloon

After wrapping the yarn randomly all around the balloon, I brushed it with the Mod Podge

Then I sprinkled glitter over the top

After watching me doing this my youngest DD pointed out that it would probably look better if I mixed glitter in with the Mod Podge.

I figured that since I wasn't too happy with the shape of my balloon (and thus, that ornament) I would try again.

I barely blew up the balloon and it took on something of an egg shape.

I mixed my glitter with the glue, per her instructions

And once this is dry, I'm optimistic that it will look more like I was hoping for

I think that my first mistake was using a large balloon.  Even though they are harder to blow up and tie off, and they pop more easily, a smaller one would have been the way to go.

By the way, if you've enjoyed following along, but you just don't think you would want to try making this variety of ornaments because of the expense, I can tell you that it has been quite affordable.  I have mostly used things I have on hand, and I've intentionally chosen ornaments based on what I already have in my stash.

If you are making, or have made, any ornaments let me know and share a link with me.  I'd love to get more fun ideas!

I'll update this post in the morning with my finished ornament.

 ETA: Here's it is

It looks pretty on the tree, but it has me saying, "Hmmmmm...." I'm not sure how I feel about it.  Or more appropriately, it has me wondering whether it was worth the effort.  I think I'd like to try it with embroidery floss, and maybe I'll try good old Elmers next time.
